Audition Information

2022 - 2023 Season

Audition Date: Saturday, August  20, 2022

Time: 8:00 - 4:00 pm (Winds in the morning & Strings in the afternoon)

Location: Idaho State University, Fine Arts Building (Goranson Hall)

Who is Required to Audition?
 - All ISU and area HS students wishing to be a part of the ISCS must audition annually for placement.
 - All new community members.
 - Any players wishing to be considered for our vacant principal positions.
​​​​​​​ - Any community members that wish to play for feedback, to get back in shape, or to change position in the rotation are welcome to audition but are not required to do so. It would be a great opportunity this season to come and play for our new artistic director!

We will be hearing scheduled auditions for section rotation consideration for all string and wind sections, and any sublist considerations. Principal auditions will be scheduled in 20-minute time slots.  Section auditions will be scheduled in 10-minute time slots. Please prepare the requirements listed below.

1. An exposition from the standard concertos OR one movement from Bach solo sonatas and partitas OR a solo piece
2. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5, Mvt 1: 32-36

Section Viola
1. Short Solo - two to three minutes (chosen by auditionee)
2. Copland: Appalachian Spring, excerpt 11 - 14

Section Cello
1. Short solo (chosen by auditionee)
2. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5, Mvt. III, (Reh 89 - 92)
3. Mozart:  Symphony No. 40, Mvt. I, pick-up to m. 115-m. 138
4. Mendelssohn:  A Midsummer Night's Dream, Scherzo, letters C-D

Section Bass
1. Short solo excerpt at least at the level of the Simandl 30 Etudes (chosen by auditionee)
2. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 (from the allegro non troppo at the end of the second line to the end of tenth line)

Principal Flute

3. Mozart: Requiem, III, 2 (Tuba Mirum), entire movement Tenor trombone part (trombone 2)          

Bass trombone audition material:

1. Exposition or opening of a bass trombone solo (chosen by auditionee)
2. Rossini: Barber of Seville Overture (Symphonic version) G - first not of H (3rd trombone)
3. Mozart: Requiem, II Kyrie - entire movement
